With a vibrant magenta colour palette, South African artist Teboho Makoatsa graces us with a moment of intimate adoration between husband and wife. “My Pride and Joy” engages the viewer with visual delight through the combination of bold floral patterns with confident, colourful brushstrokes that define the image in a minimal manner. The narrative so relevant to many South African households, where families from rural backgrounds experience the departure of husbands and parents who have found work in the city to support their families. Makoatsa describes this bittersweet moment of where there is gratitude for work, but sorrow for the family who remain behind.

Makoatsa walks the line between representation and abstraction, finding inspiration in the human experience and translating it through expressive mark making and vivid imagery. Coming from the rural areas of the Free State, Makoatsa explores the warm-heartedness of community through an authentic lens. He possesses a confident painterly style with decorative backgrounds that define his style as completely his own.
