“Shangaan Dress 6” is a continuation of the exquisite portrayal of Shangaan women in their traditional dress. Placed into the centre of the artwork is collaged within the paint, a barometer or pressure meter, speaking to unseen personal pressure within the subject. Explosive mark making indicates decisive action followed by the oversized charcoal drawn foot. Selibe says: “the foot symbolises a “stepping out” of isolation into the new era after hard lockdown”. By introducing this prominent leg and protruding foot, Stompie simultaneously draws parallels to women stepping out of many other imposed constraints.
Soft green tones and tactile textures distinguishes these later works from the earlier white backgrounds. Stompie’s signature expressionistic mark making remains confident and calculated with masterful placement of each mark and painterly effect.
