“A scene on a farm (ironically) called ‘Avondale’ (such a British name) in the middle of the Karoo desert near a town called Beaufort
West. The red earth of the land has played a role in many a poet’s writings and is often attributed to the history of blood spilled in these lands.” Mark O’Donovan.

O’Donovan portrays events that transpired beneath the skin of this landscape, reflecting on landownership in South Africa: A friend of the artist grew here, later adopted two children, also born here, whose parents worked on the land. These children will inherit ownership of the land. The labourer’s children have become the landowner’s concluding the fabulous journey of life.
