Abstract Johannesburg

The artist has used raw canvas, inks, and ballpoint pens to construct this artwork.  It is made up of tiny cut-out squares of canvas which were unresolved abstract paintings which have been deconstructed and then reconstructed into a new resolved work.  The cut-out squares are placed in vertical lines which evoke a sense of a city. Ballenden explains that “This work was cut up obsessively until I found a sense of order and peace in the re-joining of the pieces of my life.”
