“I begin with a scribble and a splash of ink and structure lines in pencil and ballpoint pens. Then cutting and re-joining the pieces with additional collages from other paintings” explains Ballenden. Abstract Squares is made up of nine smaller squares, each one is slightly different, but the overall composition is held together by overlapping marks or collaged pieces. This piece reflects various processes as no two squares are the same. The marks on many of the squares evoke the quality of bark rings, thus eluding to the passing of time. The process of mark-making on squares can also be equated to writing on pages in a diary. The artist often mentions the fact that her artworks are her diaries as they are the places where she records her experiences.
