It is human nature to seek out connectedness and celebrate relationships between sisters, brothers, parents, extended families, and friends. In 2021 however, we find ourselves in a world where there is a constant disruption, separation, the theatre and politics of borders, wall building and exclusion due to Covid-19.
Andrew Ntshabele`s artwork “As it is written 4” reflects authentic storytelling through his skillful combinations of background collages with foreground images. “As it is written 4” references communication, relationships, and world travel through the specifically chosen vintage postcards and stamps with references to tourism, and Christmas. Toward the bottom of the piece, we see handwritten recipes which speak of the gathering of humans over a homecooked meal. Nostalgia and memory are subjective to our own specific narrative.
There is a space created for reflection, between foreground and background. The image of two sisters that Andrew paints, hold each other closely with an intimate bond, contrasted against the background, allow one to contemplate our own individual circumstances, as we navigate as individuals and as families, through this unique period in history. In time to come, this artwork will become a poignant reminder of current circumstances, of the challenges and our ability to overcome.
