    " Re - Wilding "

Re-wilding opens 21 March at 2pm at Artyli Gallery

Artyli Gallery is pleased to present Re-wilding, the gallery’s second exhibition of 2026, opened by renowned art writer and cultural critic Dr Ashraf Jamal. The exhibition has been curated by Karen Cullinan, and brings together the works of Cassian Robbertze, Sylvester Mqeku, Carey Carter, Keonah Nyembe, Paula Ante, John Moore, and Phumzile Buthelezi, whose practices span sculpture, ceramics, photography, painting, and mixed media. Each artist approaches material as a site of memory and transformation, creating a body of work that is curious, tactile, and deeply attentive to the ways form, process, and meaning intersect.

Borrowed from ecological language, re-wilding describes the restoration of systems through the removal of control, allowing natural intelligence and relation to regenerate. In this exhibition, the concept expands beyond ecology into emotional, cultural, spiritual, and political terrains. The artists work with materials that carry traces of time and experience — clay, earth, industrial matter, digital surfaces, and photographic images — allowing intuition and process to guide the work. Rather than prescribing fixed narratives, Re-wilding opens a space of encounter where meaning unfolds gradually, inviting viewers to slow down, reflect, and rediscover the quiet relations between the human and the more-than-human world.
