The art of Morgan Mahape is significantly influenced by the style of “portière” which is a hanging curtain placed over a door or a doorless entrance to a room. The style was rather popular in the 1970s. Mahape utilises beads to create very detailed portraits in a vibrant celebration of African identity and the diversity of the African continent. Mahape’s artistic process is meticulous and labour-intensive, serving as a metaphor for resilience of the African community, while his distinct colour palette, most notably hues of green and red, represent the collective experiences of Africans. Mahape’s message is twofold - of ecocentrism and communitarianism, of conservation and community; hereby foregrounding the dual responsibility of the individual within a commune and toward the environment.
