Printmaking, graphic design & darkroom photography are the foundational mediums through which Mbali Tshabalala expresses her concept. As Tshabala considers the deep crevice of the subconscious, her concept pivots on movement of the body, and meditation for the mind that gives rise to awareness. The artistic practice of Tshabalala above all grapples with various understanding of mental health within communities of colour, particularly amongst Black women. In foregrounding the vulnerability of mind and body in relation to mental health, Tshabala reflects on the body's limit becoming a meeting site of tenderness and interdependence. Tshabala makes Black culture, and more specifically Black women. the muses of art; hers is an act of inserting those who have been cast to the shadows. Tshabala engages in the navigation of the contemporary and the traditional; in an increasingly globalised world, she seeks a soft synergy between internal personal and external foreign cultures.
