The work of Samantha Maseko draws inspiration from leading Black figures in the music and art industries to centre on themes of identity and femininity. Maseko questions the misrepresentation of Black beauty and Black femininity in the media. Maseko references colourism, texturism and the hypersexualisation of Black and Brown female bodies, that stands in relation to Western beauty standards which have historically, and still in the present, ostracised women of colour. Maseko adorns the figures in her portraits with a headdress to emphasise the need to embrace being crowned in African culture and African forms of beauty.
