Karen Cullinan is one such artist that employs phenomenology in her art practice to visually capture her subjective experiences. Cullinan is significantly inspired by American video artist Bill Viola , regarded as a pioneer of new media art that combines image and sound. Influenced by Bill Viola, Karen places emphasis on themes of consciousness and human experiences of life and death as she illustrates loss, ailments of the body and the cumulative emergence of the self with heightened awareness. Cullinan’s artworks serve as a reminder that despite distortion and fragmentation, there is wholeness - capturing the essence of the aphorism that it is within the cracks that there is gold, that there is light that radiates through.
