The oeuvre of Candice Kramer references people, historical family photos and antiquated maps within the inner city setting of contemporary and 20th century Johannesburg. Kramer is intrigued by the transience of being, that stands in contrast to the permanence of urban infrastructure that is tethered to history. Painting on industrial materials such as steel, copper and pewter, Kramer interrogates alchemical processes of regeneration and degeneration, by manipulating the shape of metal surfaces to create intricate forms and natural textures born from rust and corrosion. Kramer seeks to bring vibrancy and dynamism to the materials that have constructed her hometown, using these mediums to question notions of spatiality and belonging.  Kramer’s artistic practice portrays the presence of progress through street workers amidst the bustle of living, hereby highlighting passages of temporality and invoking a sense of nostalgia.
