Lynette van Tonder explores variations of  identity, relationships and belonging, while placing significant emphasis on intimate relationships that have the ability to unsettle and alter the foundations of authentic identity. Van Tonder utilises stitching, sewing and repetitive tasks to  interrogate traditional and contemporary understandings of femininity, in relation to what it means to be a woman, a mother, a friend and lover. Neither sewing nor embroidery are intended to create a perfect tapestry but rather are forms of expressionistic mark-making. Lynette van Tonder’s works are intended to provoke insight and thought into the time spent on earth - the trails blazed and the legacy that is left in our wake.
